Leveraging the Science of Motivation in Games and the Workplace

 Speaker:
Andy Marks

 Overview

In recent years, a flurry of highly-quotable statistics about ‘workplace engagement’ have made engagement a key objective for HR and Talent Development initiatives – a revolutionary development that promises significant, positive results across nearly every industry.  Much can be learned from analyzing the success of the video game industry, where companies must engage to exist.  This talk focuses on how the science of motivation – especially Self-Determination Theory (SDT)– has been applied in the games industry to sustain high-quality engagement, and how the SDT framework is increasingly being used in the workplace to maximize productivity, learning, and well-being.  It will include case studies from the world of games, as well as a glance at tools and strategies some major corporations are using.

Speaker Bio

With his colleagues at Immersyve, Andy Marks is a motivational design expert who has consulted on the design of over 50 video games, working directly with nearly every major developer, including EA, Warner Bros., Ubisoft, Zynga, King Games, and others.  He also builds corporate training games, including a recent project with Zurich Insurance Group.

The Immersyve founding team includes Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, creators of the leading scientific theory of motivation in the world – Self-Determination Theory – regularly used in thousands of empirical studies to predict sustained engagement, value, and well-being.  Using a variety of methodologies, Immersyve deploys validated metric sets that measure core psychological needs to determine the ‘motivational profile’ of an experience (a game, a workplace, etc.).  Those measurements are in turn predictive of numerous KPIs, and provide granular, actionable insights for increasing motivation.
